About Rockledge Florida
Rockledge is a city in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 24,926 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville metropolitan area.
The area around Rockledge was first settled by European Americans in the 1850s. By 1883, the town had a post office, a general store, and a population of 100. The town was incorporated in 1895.
The city's name comes from the Rockledge Hotel, which was built in 1885 by George M. Bobbitt. The hotel was named for the rockledge, or rock outcropping, on which it was built.
The city is close to the Brevard Zoo, the largest zoo in Florida. The zoo is located on 55 acres of land and features over 500 animals.
Rockledge is located in east-central Brevard County, adjacent to the city of Cocoa. It is bounded to the north by the city of Melbourne, to the south by unincorporated Viera East, and to the west by the city of Port St. John. State Road 520 passes through the center of the city, leading east 15 miles (24 km) to downtown Orlando and west 28 miles (45 km) to Melbourne. State Road 407, the Bee Line Expressway, runs north-south through Rockledge, leading north 28 miles (45 km) to Titusville and south 21 miles (34 km) to Melbourne.
